A guide to South Asian food in Brampton
In Brampton, South Asian food isn't a niche. It's the mainstream. The city northwest of Toronto has one of the highest proportions of South Asian residents of any city in Canada, most of them Punjabi, and its restaurants reflect that. Dhabas, sweet shops, lounge-style Indian bars, Hyderabadi biryani houses and South Indian cafes all sit side by side in suburban plazas, and many are open late.
Where to eat
Brampton's restaurants are spread across the city's plazas, but a few areas stand out:
- Downtown Brampton (Main Street and Queen Street East). The historic core has a strong cluster. Taste of Amritsar and Street Chaat are on Main Street North, Delhi Momos is on McArter Lane, and on Queen Street East you'll find Signature by Punjabland, a fine-dining room, alongside Badshah Bar and Tawa Ghar.
- Kennedy Road South. Home to PunjabLand, one of the highest-rated restaurants in our Brampton listings.
- Bramalea and the east end. Desi Road at Bramalea City Centre and Musafir Kitchen & Bar on West Drive.
- North and northeast Brampton. Newer neighbourhoods along Mayfield Road, Bovaird Drive, McVean Drive and Ebenezer Road have a growing number of lounges and family restaurants, including Ceremony, Mastani, Oh Bombay and Malai.
What Brampton does best
Punjabi food. This is Brampton's home cooking: sarson da saag with makki di roti in winter, dal makhani, butter chicken, chole bhature, amritsari kulcha and fish pakora. Taste of Amritsar takes its name from the Punjabi city famous for its kulchas.
Sweets. Brampton has more sweet shops per listing than anywhere else we cover: around eighteen of our Brampton listings are sweet shops or restaurants known for desserts. Jalebi, gulab jamun, barfi, rasmalai and seasonal specials fly off the counters before Diwali, Lohri and Vaisakhi. Kesar Sweets & Restaurant is one of the best rated.
Lounges and cocktails. A newer wave of Brampton restaurants are built for a night out, with full bars, live music and modern Indian menus. Tikka Lounge, Malai and Signature by Punjabland are good examples.
South Indian and Hyderabadi food. Around a dozen Brampton listings are South Indian, and specialises in Hyderabadi biryani and curries.
